Road Trip with Kids

Virginia Beach Bound

A family road trip with kids…. It made me a bit nervous at first…the thought of a long road trip with 2 small children.  We loved the idea and just hoped our boys whom are 5 and 7 would too!  Our destination, Virginia Beach U.S.A.  We mapped it all out in Google Maps.  It is about an 11 hour trip by car.  Not including frequent washroom breaks, slow traffic, missing an exit, etc.!

We knew with the long travel we would need to stay over at a hotel on the way.  Travel tip:  Don’t forget travel games, movies, colouring and some car toys and lots of snacks if you have small children.  We figured the 6 hour mark was a good time to stop and stay over.

Finding a place to stay on the road

So we decided to pull out the trusty iPhone and use the Fanatic Tourist to find a good hotel at the next closest city (at the 6 hour mark).  We searched and found Winchester, VA., USA.  I have the say, using the Fanatic Tourist site was fun.  I found all the information about the hotels in Winchester all in one screen. It was fast and easy to read various reviews before we finally set on a hotel that met all our criteria.  Which was; pool for kids, restaurant that was kid friendly, 2 queen sized beds, TV in room and very clean! All we had to do was click on the “Book Now” button fill in my visa information and we were booked!

Had I not read the reviews I would have been very disappointed, as some of the hotels that sounded really good…were really bad!  Thank goodness for the great reviews that people take the time to write.  We settled on the George Washington Hotel in Winchester.  It was awesome and had everything we wanted!

We spent one fun filled night and were on the road again.  Once in Virginia Beach we rented a Very Affordable Cottage at the First Landing State Park at Virginia Beach.  The climate-controlled cabins available at First Landing sizes and sleeping arrangements vary by park. Click here for photos of Virginia State Park cabins. Note that not all of the cabins pictured on Flickr may be rented. Some are historical features.

We loved the cabin stay, and the park was gorgeous.  There are walking, biking, and hiking trails.  Activities at the beach for kids of all ages, outdoor movie night and the list goes on.  We tried a new beach everyday…there are many beaches to choose from!

Many Family Friendly Fun Activities

Virginia Beach has something for everyone and we just loved it!  There are so many delicious seafood restaurants, dolphin watching, shopping, movies, go carting, water parks, and aquariums.  There is definitely no end to things you can do.  If we ever go back we will have the boys take surfing lessons…there were lots of surfers, and the boys thought it was so cool!

All in all, we really enjoyed our family beach holiday in Virginia Beach.  It was a successful fun filled road trip with kids.
